Oh, The College Life

So much has happened since my last blog post. Besides watching some films, reading books about films, and class, I can also say that I have been bombarded from every angle about women's rights.

Christine Caine launched the Propel Women movement here at Liberty last week, and lets just say, this campus has been a war zone because of it. There are those that are completely against her, those that kiss the ground she walks upon they love her so much, and those that are in between. On top of that, my English class has been reading Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman", and my Biblical Worldview class has been discussing "Gender Issues" or in other words, the roles of men and women in marriage in relationships and in the church. Let's just say I've had a bit too much of this thrown at me at once, and will be glad when things calm down a bit. I guess some women still feel held back by men in society, but I really don't relate. I think there is a great deal of movement toward equality between men and women, and, well, I think the Bible speaks quite clearly on the roles of men and women.
The past couple weeks, I have been trying to study the art of screenwriting in my spare time. I read Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat", the shooting script for "Inception", and have started to read "Save the Cat Strikes Back"(Also by Blake Snyder). I loved Blake Snyder's writing style. His personality practically jumped off the page. His advice and tips also seemed very useful. As the cine-nerd that I am, I of course had to immediately apply what I learned in "Save the Cat"!  I broke down the "Inception" script into the BS2, or Blake Snyder's beat sheet. If you have never seen this breakdown of the format of screenplays, I encourage you to look it up, we used it in our screenwriting class last semester. Here are some pictures of the notebook I created off of "Inception".
Last weekend, I had the extreme pleasure of having two of my friends from screenwriting sleep over. Of course, as cinema obsessed students, we had a movie marathon which involved lots of popcorn, "Cast Away", "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", "The Maze Runner", and the fictional drink inspired by Harry Potter, Butter Beer! Every time I watch "Cast Away" I see something new in it! I think I will be worn out from all the times Maze Runner comes up recently. My roommates and I saw it in the dollar theatre a while black, then I read the first two books, then we watched it with the RA's, and then here with my friends. I've had a bit too much of that story, yet I still need to read the last two books so I can figure out what is going to happen!!!
Flashcards have been my life lately, it seems like every class is vamping up, and all the work is piled on at once. Next week I have two tests, two papers, a speech, on top of massive readings that are due. I certainly will be very busy trying to catch up with all that this weekend. As you can see in the picture to the right, my workload is always very large. One of the papers, at least, will be fun. For Cinematography we have to watch a film and write an analysis. I didn't know what to choose, so I looked at movies that have won academy awards and chose one I hadn't seen yet, "Dances with Wolves". It was really long, but I loved it, especially the first ten minutes, and the last hour! In between that was a little slow, but overall I liked it.
Besides the previously mentioned films, I also watched "The Outsiders" which is based off of one of my favorite books, (I was disappointed in a lot of the dialogue) and "The Life of Pi". In my Cinematography class we watched a little bit of "Citizen Kane" and the short "Paper Man", which is really cute if you haven't seen it. After watching the short in class, I looked up a couple others and watched "For the Birds", "The Power of Teamwork" and "Partly Cloudy". My favorite is still "Paper Man", but I also really liked "Partly Cloudy"; it was a bit weird, but cute at the same time.
Today's Convocation was interesting. Producer Mark Burnett spoke, and showed us some clips and trailers for his new series A.D. He showed us a full eleven minutes of the second episode. I never watched his first Bible series, but it certainly was nice to have a convo speaker related to my field of work.
